Why is the Wi-Fi signal strong but the internet still slow?
Signal strength describes received radio power, not end-to-end performance. Link rate, interference, retransmissions, router load, DNS and the provider path still matter.
What this symptom actually means
A device can show full bars while connected to a busy access point, using a narrow or legacy link, or waiting on a slow upstream service. Signal must be interpreted together with latency, link speed and layered connectivity tests.
What to check
- Check the negotiated link speed instead of relying only on the signal icon.
- Compare another device on the same network to identify a client-specific limitation.
- Test Ethernet to separate the wireless link from the router and provider path.
- Check DNS response and normal page-loading latency, not only a large-file speed test.
- Observe whether the slowdown changes with location, time of day or the number of active devices.
