Why is my Wi-Fi slow?

Slow Wi-Fi can come from weak signal, a low negotiated link rate, radio congestion, device limitations, router load, DNS delay or the provider connection.

What this symptom actually means

A speed test combines several systems into one number. It cannot by itself tell whether time was lost over the radio link, inside the router, during DNS lookup, or on the provider path.

What to check

  1. Repeat the test near the router and in the problem location using the same device.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when possible, without downloading or streaming on other devices during the comparison.
  3. Check both signal strength and negotiated link speed. Strong signal with a low link rate is different from weak coverage.
  4. Compare 2.4 GHz with 5 GHz. The higher band is usually faster nearby; 2.4 GHz often reaches farther but is more crowded.
  5. Measure more than once. A single result can reflect a temporary server, device or network load.

When to escalate

Change equipment only after isolating the layer. A new router will not fix a provider outage, and a faster subscription will not fix poor coverage in a distant room.
