Coverage

Why does Wi-Fi only work well near the router?

Performance that drops mainly with distance usually points to radio coverage, obstruction or placement rather than the internet subscription.

What this symptom actually means

Signal bars are coarse and different devices report them differently. Walls, reinforced concrete, metal, furniture, antenna orientation and the chosen band all change the usable link.

What to check

  1. Measure close to the router and at each problem location without changing device or test method.
  2. Place the router in the open, above floor level and away from metal cabinets, televisions and dense obstacles.
  3. Compare 5 GHz nearby with 2.4 GHz at longer range; do not assume one band is always better.
  4. Avoid placing a repeater where the original signal is already unusable. It must receive a healthy link before it can extend one.
  5. For fixed rooms, a wired access point or wired mesh backhaul is generally more predictable than repeating a weak wireless link.

How Infrazoom can help

Use Wi-Fi Live while walking between locations and save the signal, BSSID and roaming evidence. With a paired Appliance, Android can also record samples on an imported floor plan.

When to escalate

Plan an additional access point when placement changes cannot cover the required area. Contact the provider only if its supplied equipment is faulty or the wired internet path also fails.

Infracheck provides diagnostic evidence and guidance. It cannot identify the owner of a nearby network, access your router administration account, or guarantee the cause of an intermittent provider fault from one scan.
